Description

De Pannemaecker, Pierre

Revue de l'horticulture belge et étrangère [...]. Ghent Bureaux de la Revue 1875-1914 24 vol., 4to (min. spotting and browning). Green cloth, flat spines, red edges. Nice set. Complete collection, richly illustrated with ± 745 chromolithographs protected by tissue guards showing mostly flowers (some representing parterres, baskets and insects), ca. 740 plates in b/w and numerous in-text. The superb chromolithographs are the work of Pierre De Pannemaecker (and his son, from 1904 onwards), a pupil of botanist Louis Van Houtte. He became professor of drawing at the horticulture school of Ghent and illustrator for many botanical periodicals. The aim of this periodical was to "mettre l'horticulture à la portée de tous" and to support "bonnes plantes délaissées ou méconnues", "plantes ornementales vulgaires et faciles à la culture" (Préface de 1875-1876). It therefore favourised common species such as chrysanthemum, azalea, rose, begonia, rhododendron, hydrangea, tulip, petunia, clematis, verbena, carnation, hyacinth, narcissus, cyclamen, iris, dahlia, etc. Nevertheless, it also gave space to more exotic flowers, especially orchids, which were very popular in the late 19th c. Volume 1897 offers at p. 242 a stamp published on the occasion of the XIV International Exhibition of the Royal Society of Agriculture and Botany of Ghent "Floralies gantoises". We join three booklets of the year 1878: "Revue de l'horticulture belge et étrangère [...] Sommaire du N° 5 [- 6, 11]." Ref. UGent. - Not in Nissen, Pritzel, Opac KBR.
