Contemp. mottled calf, gilt decorated spine with 6 bands (tr. of use and repairs, weak joints). 1st French Janssonius edition (1st It. ed.: 1567), offering the reader an eloquent description of the 16th-c. towns in the Low Countries by the Italian resident and author Guicciardini (1521-1589). Petrus Montanus updated the French text by François de Belleforest (1530-1583) for the Cornelis Claesz. 1609 edition, here used by Janssonius. With engr. title and 95 engr. reprinted from Blaeu's Latin 1613 edition, incl. maps and town plans of Belgium, the Netherlands and Northern France. All plates mentioned in the "Table des pages" are present, except for the map entitled "Berghe de S.Winoc" (Guicc. 12, pl. 73) which is in fact a view of Dunkirk with Bergues in the background and is rarely present (Touwaide lists 3 copies).
