CELLARIUS, Christoph Geographia antiqua: being a complete sett of maps, of antient geography, beautifully engraved from Cellarius. On thirty-three copper-plates. Designed for the use of schools, and of gentlemen, who make the antient writers their delight or study. London Printed for John and Paul Knapton 1747 4to: [4] pp.; 33 pl. (some faint spotting and min. browning, some larger spots on the last map). Modern half brown morocco, marbled paper on covers, spine with 5 raised bands, black leather title label, mod. endpapers. Good copy. First English edition of this attractive atlas with focus on the ancient world. Illustrated with 33 bold double-page engraved maps by R.W. Seale and W.H. Toms covering the three divisions of the ancient world: Europe, Asia and Africa. On the maps two different typestyles, italic and roman, are used to distinguish between ancient and modern place names. They show a detailed topography with towns, churches, mosques and more. The map "Sicilia antiqua" shows an erupting Mount Etna. The map "Insularum Britannicarum faceis antiqua" includes an inset of Thule Island, also called Morrell Island, one of the southernmost of the South Sandwich Islands. Named on account of its remote location, after the mythical land of Thule, said by ancient geographers to lie at the extreme end of the Earth. The map of the Nile Delta "Aegypti Delta et Nili Ostia" locates Alexandria, Memphis and the pyramids. Ref. ESTC T184970. - COPAC. Prov. Name (?) on right corner of title.
