Blaeu [1655] Large folio: [12 incl. engr. title]-171-[19-6]-xii-33 pp.; 17 hand-coloured maps (considerably dampstained on text lvs, map of Bejing from another atlas loosely inserted and verso browned, another map cartouche cut out and pasted on p. 26, map of Suchuen with a bit shorter margins (also from another copy?). The overall condition of the maps is very good. A nice contemp. colour and almost no dampstains. The 1st map, "Imperii Sinarum nova descriptio" is in a less good condition: the centerfold is underlaid, there are some waterstains and is partly dusty). Contemp. vellum, gilt decorated (hinges broken, undulating and used). Latin amended edition of Blaeu's Atlas of China, published in the same year as the 1st ed. The atlas is largely the work of Martino Martini (1614-1661) who compiled his maps from Chinese originals and insisted to have Blaeu engrave and publish these. The text includes Martini's own account, written in the first person, of the geography and history, the manners and customs of the Chinese empire and its peoples. Given the title, this copy was separately published and made no part of the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum". Ref. van der Krogt II [2:502B] with title 2:26B.
