DEL SARTO, Andrea (after) John the Baptist preaching. 19th c Drawing, pen and brown ink, brown wash, heightened with white, 22 x 25,6 cm, brown paper, unsigned (minor creases, lead oxidation in white heightenings). Under passe-partout. John the Baptist preaching to the crowds of Jericho. Christ is approaching in the left background. After a grisaille fresco in the Chiostro dello Scalzo in Florence. Around 1508-1509 Andrea del Sarto, who was a member of the Scalzo, received a commission from the brothers to paint a series of murals in grisaille, tones of grey, with scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist. Andrea del Sarto completed the Scalzo cycle in 1526.
