VAN THULDEN, Theodoor. After Peter Paul Rubens Pompa Introitus Ferdinandi. Antwerp Gaspar Gevaerts 1635-1641 15 large etchings, various states and conditions. The Entry of the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand in Antwerp in April 1635 as new gouvernor of the Low Countries can be regarded as one of the most festive and sumptuous events in Antwerp history. Rubens made oil sketches for all stages, canvasses and arches, which were published in a series of 43 large-scale prints by Theodoor van Thulden in 1641 to commemorate the event. This lot comprises 15 etchings, including the view of Antwerp with the arrival of Ferdinand (pl. 3, heavily restored); The entry of the Cardinal-Infante into Antwerp through the Emperor's Gate (pl. 5); The Marriage of Maximillian of Austria and Mary (pl. 13); The Portico of the Emperors (pl. 16); The Battle of Nördlingen (pl. 27); The Temple of Janus (pl. 30); The Tree of the Austrian Genealogy (pl. 32); The Stage of Mercury (pl. 33); The Arch of the Mint (pl. 35 & 36); Bellerophon Slaying the Chimera (pl 40); Bonfire at Antwerp cathedral (pl. 41).
